The beneficent potential of a vargottama planet and of a vargottama lagna
When a planet occupies the same sign in the natal Rashi chart [D1] and in the Navamsha [D9], it acquires an enviable beneficent potential and is called Vargottama. Its effects are like the results of a stay in its own house, even when the planet is in a hostile sign.
If the Lagna of the natal chart coincides with the Lagna of the Navamsha, it too becomes Vargottama.
Vargottama serves as a valuable support; experience shows, however, that a planet in the first degree of a movable sign and in the last degree of a dual sign is deprived of its Vargottama strength.
A Vargottama Lagna possesses uncommon power if its ruler is well placed. It gives a person the strength to come out safe and sound from any storm of life.
A planet that occupies the same sign in a varga as in the natal chart plays a positive role in the affairs of that varga.
A Vargottama planet becomes a malefic when it draws near to the Sun in the Rashi chart.
On the whole, Vargottama is a favourable position, but the degree of its auspiciousness depends on the condition of the planet: a stay in exaltation, in its own house, in a hostile sign and so on introduces its own corrections into the way the planet manifests its qualities.
Rudra divides Vargottama planets into three categories:
(1) Vargottama planets that are not placed in hostile signs and are not in debilitation;
(2) Vargottama planets placed in hostile signs;
(3) planets in debilitation.
In his words, planets of category (1) give good results, those of category (2) work as usual, and from planets of category (3) troubles are to be expected.
