Shubha, Ashubha and Chidra grahas — auspicious, inauspicious and bad planets

A planet or a karaka is called shubha (auspicious) when it:

• is in exaltation, in its Mulatrikona, in its own sign, in a friendly sign or in a trikona;
• is placed in an angular house or receives the status of Vargottama ;
• is joined to a benefic planet or receives its aspect;
• is squeezed between benefic planets;
• is a Yoga-karaka.

A planet or a karaka is considered ashubha (inauspicious) when it:

• is in debilitation or in the house of an enemy;
• is squeezed between malefic planets;
• is defeated in a planetary war
• is eclipsed by the lunar nodes;
• is joined to a malefic planet or receives its aspect;
• is placed on the border of two houses (bhava-sandhi);
• occupies the 8th or the 12th house from the Lagna.

The Chidra grahas (bad planets) for a horoscope are:

• the ruler of the 8th house;
• planets joined to the lord of the 8th;
• the ruler of the 22nd drekkana;
• a placement in the same sign in the Rashi and Navamsha charts.
• the lord of the nakshatra in which the ruler of the 8th house is placed;
• the ruler of the sign in the Navamsha into which the lord of the 8th house of the Rashi chart falls.

The period of a Chidra graha brings misfortunes, difficulties in life and illnesses.
