Indu-lagna — an indicator of wealth and prosperity in a horoscope

Find the rulers of the 9th houses from the natal and from the lunar Lagnas. Add up their kalas, divide the sum by 12 and determine the remainder. This number will show the number of the house from the Moon into which the Indu-lagna, also called the Dhana-lagna, falls.

The kalas of the planets: the Sun — 30, the Moon — 16, Mars — 6, Mercury — 8, Jupiter — 10, Venus — 12, Saturn — 1.

A benefic planet in the Indu-lagna promises unexpected wealth, an exalted planet foretells a high post, a malefic planet gives a cruel disposition and a mediocre financial position. If the Indu-lagna is empty, the person will be poor.

THE INDU-LAGNA AND FINANCIAL PROSPERITY

The ancient texts on Indian astrology often mention the word Indu-Lagna or Dhana-Lagna. Parashara also calls it Vishesha-Chandra yoga. «Indu» means the Moon, and this is a special Lagna used to assess the level of well-being. Nevertheless, experience shows that this Lagna can also be used to predict happy events in life, the acquisition of real estate and so on.

The Indu Lagna is mentioned by Kalidasa in the 6th Adhyaya of the Uttara Kalamrita. He gives the following method of calculation and interpretation. The units of brightness (the rays, or Kala) of the seven planets:

The Sun — 30, the Moon — 16, Mars — 6, Mercury — 8, Jupiter — 10, Venus — 12, Saturn — 1.

Add up the Kalas of the rulers of the 9th houses from the Lagna and from the Moon, divide them by 12 and use the remainder. The number of the sign corresponding to the remainder must be added to the position of the Moon, and thus we obtain the Indu Lagna. Thus the Indu Lagna will have the same degree in its sign as the Moon has in its own.

If there is an unafflicted benefic planet in the Indu Lagna without any influence of malefics, the native will become a millionaire. If a malefic is there, his wealth will be in thousands only. If the malefic is exalted, he will be a millionaire.

From a book on Ashtaka-varga (author: Vinay Aditya) concerning the Indu Lagna

  1. An unafflicted benefic or an exalted malefic in the Indu Lagna makes a person a multimillionaire.
  2. An ordinary influence of a malefic on this Lagna gives an ordinary financial condition.
  3. A high financial status is assured when several planets are connected with the Indu Lagna, aspect it, are in the 2nd or 11th house from it, or in kendras from it.
  4. Dasha: income comes in the periods of those planets that are connected with the Indu Lagna in a favourable way. This can work in two directions — where the Indu Lagna is placed from the ruler of the dasha/antardasha, or where the ruler of the dasha/antardasha is placed from the Indu Lagna. For example, when the Indu Lagna is in the 5th house from the ruler of the dasha, earnings may come through writing or other creative occupations, or the children may have successes during this period.
  5. Transit: when planets are in the upachaya houses (the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) from the Indu Lagna, they offer wealth in proportion to the bindus of the Ashtakavarga and the Sarvashtakavarga in these houses.
  6. Dhana yogas may be considered from the Indu Lagna. Dhana yogas are formed by means of combinations of the rulers of the 1st, 2nd, 11th, 5th and 9th, and also of the 10th house.
