The influence of the dusthanas (the «bad houses») in Vedic astrology

The influence of the dusthanas (the {3rd}, 6th, 8th and 12th houses of the horoscope)

— Houses aspected by the rulers of the 6th, 8th or 12th become weak and afflicted.

— All planets are spoiled in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.

— The malevolence of the houses is aggravated in the following order: the 8th, the 3rd, the 12th, the 6th.

— The rulers of the dusthanas (the 6th, 8th and 12th) acquire favourable qualities if they:

• are placed in strong positions,
• are squeezed between benefic planets;
• are under the influence (an aspect, a conjunction) of the lords of the 5th or 9th houses;
• are excellently placed in the divisional charts.

— The owners of the dusthanas, when placed in other dusthanas, form the favourable Viparita-raja yoga.

— The 6th house is at once a dusthana and an Upachaya house. If unfavourable influences are present, it works as a dusthana. The action of benefic planets improves the qualities of the house and switches it into the Upachaya mode.

— A planet in its own sign or in exaltation and at the same time under a powerful benefic aspect becomes favourable even if it is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses.
