Siddha yoga: how to choose the best time for undertakings
Auspicious and inauspicious combinational yogas in Muhurta
Shubha yogas. Auspicious combinations
There are special yogas formed by the combination of a particular tithi, weekday and nakshatra. Even if the tithi is inauspicious and the weekday is inauspicious too, but the combinational yoga that is formed is auspicious, then it removes the inauspicious influence of the tithi and of the weekday, and the date and time (for beginning an action) become auspicious.
Combinational yogas are stronger and more effective than individual factors such as the tithi, the vara or the nakshatra. They override the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the individual factors of the Muhurta.

Special inauspicious nakshatras
For every person, stellar astrology identifies malefic nakshatras whose transit by the Moon brings failures, disappointments, a weakening of health, troubles, or simply a bad mood. These nakshatras bear the names «kala-dosha», «ganda», «kandak» and «sthuna» and are determined for each person individually, on the basis of the positions of Saturn, the Sun and Mars in the birth horoscope. When the Moon passes through these dangerous nakshatras, no important affairs should be undertaken
Kala-dosha is the seventh nakshatra, counting from the nakshatra in which Saturn is placed in the person’s horoscope.
Ganda is the twentieth nakshatra, counting from the nakshatra of Saturn. For example, in a person’s horoscope Saturn is placed in Purva Bhadrapada. Accordingly Rohini and Anuradha, that is, the seventh and the twentieth nakshatras, will be malefic, and the transit of the Moon through these nakshatras will foretell for this person obstacles in his planned undertakings and delay in carrying them out.
Kandak. To find this nakshatra one must count the number of nakshatras from the nakshatra in which the Sun is placed up to Mula, and lay off the result obtained from Mula. For example, the Sun in a person’s horoscope is placed in Chitra. From Chitra to Mula there are six nakshatras, and the sixth nakshatra from Mula is Shatabhisha. The days when the transiting Moon passes through Shatabhisha will be unlucky for this person for any undertakings.
Sthuna. In the same way, count the number of nakshatras from the nakshatra of Mars up to Mula and lay them off from Mula. The nakshatra obtained is called «sthuna». For example, Mars in a person’s horoscope is placed in Uttara Bhadrapada; up to Mula there are 21 nakshatras, and the twenty-first nakshatra from Mula is Uttara Phalguni. The transit of the Moon through Uttara Phalguni may bring a weakening of health and failure in undertakings.
Inauspicious days
Stellar astrology holds that the days when the Moon passes through the stretch from the 3rd quarter of Dhanishta to Revati (0° Aquarius — 16° 40’ Pisces) are inauspicious for beginning any new affair. The only exception is the transit through Uttara Bhadrapada (3° 20’ — 16° 40’ Pisces), and then only for such «jupiterian-lunar» affairs as a coronation, the taking of an oath, the founding of cities and the beginning of sowing. Not especially fortunate are the days when the Moon passes through Bharani, Krittika, and the last quarters of Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati.
It should be remembered that the ganda of the Sun (the passage of the Sun from one nakshatra into another) is always dangerous with social unrest, upheavals, outbreaks of disease or natural cataclysms (especially if the ganda of the Moon and of the trans-Saturnian planets is superimposed on the ganda of the Sun). People become irritable, hot-tempered and aggressive. The ganda of the Sun lasts 4 days and begins from the 12th degree of one nakshatra up to the 2nd degree of the next nakshatra.
A special branch of jyotisha called «samhita» studies natural phenomena and makes predictions for states, countries and cities based precisely on the transits of the trans-Saturnian planets through the gandas.
Jyotisha holds that the marriage of an eldest son or daughter should not take place in the lunar month of jyeshtha (May–June — the month in which the full Moon falls on the nakshatra Jyeshtha), since it will not bring good fortune to either of the two families now joined by kinship, and may tell unfavourably on the continuation of the line and on the married happiness of the young couple. No important affairs should be undertaken when the transiting Moon is in the 88th quarter, counting from the quarter of the janma nakshatra, or approximately 293° 20’ from the coordinate of the Moon.
