Makaranda Sarini and allied Saurapaksha tables: a study
The authors did what even Dikshit did not: they recomputed Makaranda's corrections not from its words but from its own daily-motion tables, column by column. To do so they worked out the structure of the vatika tables — how a mean longitude is assembled from them — and derived each body's daily motion to the seventh sexagesimal place.
Their Table 5.1 gives: Moon -1, lunar apogee -4, Rahu +0.57, Mars 0, Mercury +16, Jupiter -8, Venus -12, Saturn +12.
Four of these numbers we derived blindly from a corpus of charts, knowing nothing of Makaranda — and they agreed. This is stronger confirmation than a citation of Dikshit: he transmitted the table, whereas here it is computed from the tables themselves, independently of us and before us.
Mars is zero in their row as in Dikshit's, and that matters too: our correction to Mars does not come from the revolutions table, and must be sought elsewhere.
