Given up for adoption at birth, he grew up in California, left college after half a year, travelled to India in search of meaning, and in 1976 built the first Apple computer in his parents' garage with Steve Wozniak. Eight years later came the Macintosh — a machine driven by a mouse rather than a command line; a year after that Jobs was pushed out of the company he had founded. The years of exile produced NeXT and Pixar, bought from George Lucas, out of which came “Toy Story”. Returning in 1997 to an Apple on the edge of bankruptcy, he shipped the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad within a decade and made it the most valuable company in the world. He died in October 2011 of pancreatic cancer, six weeks after stepping down.

He was born in San Francisco on 24 February 1955 at 19:15 Pacific time; the hour is taken from his birth certificate.
