He could draw before he could speak and at sixteen was painting with academic perfection — the rest of his life was a departure from that skill. The blue period, the rose, “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” of 1907, which broke the figure into planes, and cubism, worked out together with Braque. Then neoclassicism, the surrealist years, and “Guernica” of 1937 — an answer to the bombing of a Basque town that became the century’s great anti-war painting. Ceramics, sculpture, engraving, ballet designs; some twenty thousand works in seventy-five years. He spent most of his life in France and did not return to Spain while Franco stood there — Franco outlived him by two years.
He was born in Málaga on 25 October 1881 at 23:15 local mean time — Spain had not yet introduced a single time. The hour is on his birth certificate.
