A Corsican who spoke French with an accent, he finished artillery school and took Toulon at twenty-four. Then came Italy, Egypt, the coup of 18 Brumaire and the crown he placed on his own head in 1804. The Civil Code, the prefects, the Bank of France and the lycées outlived his rule and stand to this day; the wars he waged almost without pause cost Europe millions of lives. The Russian campaign of 1812 destroyed the Grande Armée, and Leipzig and Waterloo finished the work. He died in 1821 on Saint Helena, dictating his memoirs.
He was born in Ajaccio on 15 August 1769 at 11:00 local mean time; the hour was entered at his baptism and is quoted in the reference books without variance. His is one of the most heavily worked charts in European astrology.
