Jawaharlal Nehru
The son of a wealthy barrister, schooled at Harrow and Cambridge, he came home into the independence movement and spent nine years of his life in British prisons, where his books were written. Gandhi saw a political heir in him, though the two looked in different directions: Nehru wanted industry, science and a state without a state religion. From 1947 he was the first prime minister of independent India, for seventeen years in a row — the five-year plans, the institutes of technology, a secular constitution, non-alignment between the two blocs. His too were the partition of 1947, the knot of Kashmir and the war with China lost in 1962. His daughter Indira and his grandson Rajiv would later lead the country as well.
