Franz Kafka
A writer who published little in his lifetime and left instructions for his friend Max Brod to burn the rest; Brod disobeyed, and so The Trial, The Castle and Amerika appeared. He worked at an insurance office, wrote at night, and died of tuberculosis at forty, a year before the first of those novels came out.
