Carl Gustav Jung
The Swiss psychiatrist whom Freud at first took for his heir; after the break of 1913 he built a psychology of his own — the collective unconscious, the archetypes, introversion and extraversion (his words), individuation, synchronicity. The years after the break passed in a heavy inner crisis, out of which came the “Red Book”, printed only in 2009. He read alchemy, myth and Eastern texts as records of mental life, and held astrology to be its symbolic language: he cast charts himself and in the fifties ran an experiment on several hundred charts of married couples. He died in 1961 at Küsnacht, aged eighty-five.
He was born at Kesswil on Lake Constance on 26 July 1875 at 19:32 local mean time. The hour comes from Jung himself and the sources differ over it by a few minutes; the rising degree of such a chart moves with them.
