Bruce Lee
He was born in San Francisco while his performer parents were on tour, grew up in Hong Kong, acted in films as a child and fought on rooftops until his parents sent him back to America. There he studied philosophy, taught wing chun and devised jeet kune do — not a style but a refusal of styles: take what works and do not hold to form. Hollywood offered him servants and sidekicks, so he went back to Hong Kong, where in two years he made four films that turned the genre over. “Enter the Dragon” came out a month after his death: he died in July 1973 of a swelling of the brain, at thirty-two — and became a legend larger, if anything, than in life.
