She spent the war in occupied Holland: the hunger winter of 1944, tulip bulbs for food, secret ballet performances in aid of the resistance. A ballerina she never became — the years of malnutrition told — and she turned to acting. Her first big part, the princess in “Roman Holiday” (1953), won her an Oscar at twenty-four. Then “Sabrina”, “Funny Face”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with the black Givenchy dress that became a sign of the age, and “My Fair Lady”. At forty she all but left the cinema, and from 1988 until her death she worked as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador — Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Bangladesh. She died in Switzerland in 1993.

She was born in Ixelles near Brussels on 4 May 1929 at 03:00 summer time (UTC+1); the hour is on her birth certificate.
