Amelia Earhart
She learned to fly at twenty-four, buying a second-hand biplane with money earned as a telephone operator and a photographer. In 1928 she was taken across the Atlantic as a passenger, and the fame felt unearned: in 1932 she flew the same ocean alone, fifteen hours from Newfoundland to a pasture in Ireland — the second person after Lindbergh and the first woman. Then came the solo flight from Hawaii to California that nobody had made before, the lectures and articles that paid for the next flights, and the campaigning for women’s equal place in aviation. In 1937 she set out to circle the globe along the equator with the navigator Fred Noonan; on 2 July, on the leg to tiny Howland Island in the middle of the Pacific, the radio went quiet. The largest search in the history of the American navy found nothing.
She was born in Atchison, Kansas on 24 July 1897 at 23:30 Central time. The hour comes from the family record, and at so late an hour the rising sign of a chart is especially sensitive to the exact minute.
