Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira, translated by Chidambara Iyer
The Brihat Samhita is Varahamihira's second large book and of an entirely different kind from the Brihat Jataka. A samhita speaks not of a person's fate but of a country's and a year's: omens, rains, harvests, earthquakes, comets, architecture, gems, rites.
What matters for our work is something else: in the samhita the same author sets out the astronomical grounds he also uses in the jataka. Planetary motion, risings, eclipses — all of it is stated more directly here than in the treatise on birth, and his parameters are checked against these chapters.
