Brihat Jataka with Bhattotpala's commentary, translated by V. Subrahmanya Sastri
This edition is worth more than the other translations for one reason: it carries the commentary of Bhattotpala (tenth century), the oldest that survives. Sanskrit verse often admits two readings, and a translator must choose silently; Bhattotpala chooses aloud and explains why.
The table of contents follows the original: the signs and their divisions, the nature of the planets, multiple births, conception, the circumstances of birth, early death, length of life, dasas and antardasas, ashtakavarga, avocation, raja yogas, nabhasa yogas, chandra yogas, planetary conjunctions, ascetic yogas, the Moon in the nakshatras and signs, the planets in the signs, aspects, planets in the bhavas and in the vargas, miscellaneous yogas, evil yogas, female horoscopy, death, and nashta jataka (reconstructing a lost horoscope).
Subrahmanya Sastri accompanies the translation with analysis and worked examples, including complete charts computed by hand. For checking a program that matters more than the translation itself: an example shows not only the rule but the order in which it is applied, and it is usually the order that we differ on.
